The viticulture and enology steering committee created a quarterly electronic newsletter, Appellation Cornell, to provide in-depth research articles written for laypersons, as well as faculty profiles, student profiles, industry profiles, and brief articles to highlight research, extension, and teaching activities of Cornell's Viticulture and Enology Program to a national and international audience. In its first year, readership comprised 1000 to 1500 online subscribers in 45 states, three Canadian provinces, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Fifty articles were published in 2010.
A recent survey conducted by the Finger Lakes Grape Program has found that its New York Grapes & Wine Classifieds website had an economic impact of more than $1.3 million on the grape and wine industry in New York State in 2011.
I work on developing communication strategies for the SRI-Rice Center at Cornell University and on implementing knowledge-sharing efforts that serve global communities involved with the system of rice intensification (SRI) and conservation agriculture (CA). Specifically, I design and manage the SRI and CA websites and associated social media, facilitate links among international, national and topical SRI networks, and develop databases and platforms for sharing research related to SRI, CA and related systems of crop intensification.
Invasive species can have a major impact on the ability to export agricultural goods in our global economy. Monitoring for invasive species yet to be found in New York state is a major component of the Cooperative Agriculture Pest Survey, a cooperative project between the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, the state Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program, and Cornell Cooperative Extension grape programs.
The Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) seeks to provide fundamental, science-based, on-farm food safety knowledge to fresh fruit and vegetable farmers, packers and regulatory personnel while addressing future produce safety regulations resulting from the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The PSA was formed in 2010 through a cooperative agreement between Cornell University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration.
We are learning the extent and severity of dairy food chain contamination with mycotoxins, toxins that come from fungi, that impact human health.
U.S. ethanol policies have contributed to changes in the levels and the volatilities of revenues and costs facing ethanol firms. The implications of these policies for optimal investment behavior are investigated through an extension of the real options framework that allows for the consideration of volatility in both revenue and cost components, as well as their correlation. The effects of policy on plant revenues dominate the effects of those policies on production costs.
Globally, reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows has declined in the past decades, which reduces productivity and profitability of dairy herds. We collected data on reproductive performance in 94 high-producing dairy cows during lactation for comparison to their specific genotype differences for a gene related to growth hormone function.
The Cornell Small Grains Breeding and Genetics Project has released a new soft white winter wheat variety called Hopkins with exceptionally high grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance. This variety is moderately resistant to fusarium head blight and is more sprout resistant than older varieties, thus increasing the efficiency of production for the farmer, and thereby resulting in higher profits.
