2013 to 2018

The sensory representation of the external chemical world in the brain is a translation of chemical features into patterns of brain activity. It is the nature these patterns—how that are established by stimulant patterns, how they vary in a population, and ultimately how they interact with other brain functions, e.g. emotions (joy) or behavior (buying wine)—that is the object of our research. We study aroma perception in order to provide information about food composition to producers that will allow them to produce likable, healthy and more profitable products.

2012 to 2018

All lateral organs in plant shoots are derived from shoot meristems, which are discrete populations of stems cells that are self-renewing and organogenic. Likewise, grain yield in maize is dependent upon the formation and maintenance of a variety of shoot meristem structures in the ear inflorescence. Genetic and genomic analyses of meristems will provide additional insight into the mechanisms of shoot meristem function in an important crop plant.


Spotted wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii, originally from Asia, is an invasive fruit fly that became established in NY and surrounding states in autumn of 2011. Unlike other fruit flies that typically only infest overripe and rotten fruit, female SWD oviposit in ripe fruit, thereby making them unmarketable. Economic loss projections for NY fruit are estimated at $5M. Soft-skinned fruits are at greatest risk.

2011 to 2012

Group housing of calves with its attendant use of waste milk in a safe manner offers economical and biological advantages to producers. Previously held beliefs regarding disease risk have been changed with a new definition of proper ventilation and the advantages of more natural feeding methods and social interaction amongst baby calves.

2011 to 2017

This project strives to improve food availability, nutrition and health in eastern India and Africa while providing opportunities for diversification of income and consequent economic and social advancement of the rural poor and women in particular.
The project aims to strengthen both the agricultural education and extension systems in these institutions by addressing cross-cutting areas, including governance, gender and equity, innovative education programs, and modern information and communication technology.


The Cornell Dairy Fellows Program is designed for students who are interested in careers related to the dairy industry. Approximately 140 students participate in the Fellows Program each year. The program integrates a set of courses addressing the disciplines in the industry, industry and farm visits, in-depth farm analysis, seminars with industry leaders, industry conferences, exchange programs, international trips, and summer internships in dairy-related careers. These experiences allow students to apply their knowledge, skills, and mind-set in multiple real-life situations.


The viticulture and enology steering committee created a quarterly electronic newsletter, Appellation Cornell, to provide in-depth research articles written for laypersons, as well as faculty profiles, student profiles, industry profiles, and brief articles to highlight research, extension, and teaching activities of Cornell's Viticulture and Enology Program to a national and international audience. In its first year, readership comprised 1000 to 1500 online subscribers in 45 states, three Canadian provinces, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Fifty articles were published in 2010.

2008 to 2010

For five decades, the project has developed new fundamental and application knowledge on the nature and management (IPM) of the pathogens and diseases of onions grown on the muckland (organic) soils of New York. Studies on the nature and management of pathogens and diseases affecting other vegetable crops grown on the muckland soils also were undertaken as needed and that growers requested. Such studies were emphasized for the time durations required for problem resolution.

2008 to 2011

The thrust of my research is understanding and enhancing teachers and students’ understandings of scientific inquiry and the nature of science, including knowledge of models and modeling in science and evolutionary concepts.
