Eggplant is a common vegetable grown throughout Asia by resource-poor farmers. Eggplant is attacked by a caterpillar known as the eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB) and growers typically spray every 2-3 days to control it, usually with little success but with considerable health and environmental harm. Using an engineered plant that expresses a common bacterial protein used by organic growers, these farmers now have a solution that completely eliminates the need to spray for EFSB.

Davies spent one year (2011-2012) as a Jefferson Fellow in residence at the Department of State in Washington DC, serving as a senior science adviser to the office of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Textile Trade Affairs in the Bureau of Economics and Business. The Fellow position continues with Davies in the role of consultant.
My research focuses on present-day challenges facing agriculture, such as climate change, environmental degradation, land grabbing, and conversion of crop land to fuel production.
The Polson Institute for Global Development is an endowed program based in the Department of Development Sociology. The Institute facilitates collaborative research by funding Research Working Groups and research seed grants. It also assists graduate student dissertation research; sponsors seminars and outreach programs, including documentaries and the Rural New York Initiative; and hosts visiting scholars from throughout the world.
I work on developing communication strategies for the SRI-Rice Center at Cornell University and on implementing knowledge-sharing efforts that serve global communities involved with the system of rice intensification (SRI) and conservation agriculture (CA). Specifically, I design and manage the SRI and CA websites and associated social media, facilitate links among international, national and topical SRI networks, and develop databases and platforms for sharing research related to SRI, CA and related systems of crop intensification.
More than half of the world's population depends on rice as their staple food, and the U.S. is the world's fourth largest exporter of this essential commodity. Rice production must increase dramatically and in a sustainable manner to meet the demands of the 21st century. Population pressure, natural resource limitations, changing climate and globalized markets all contribute to the rapidly evolving landscape of agriculture and underscore the importance of agricultural innovation. Advances in genomic science offer new opportunities to address many of the challenges for the future.
The project is focused on the safe and effective development and commercialization of bio-engineered crops in developing countries.
eClips is a digital database of 10,000 clips and more than 40 podcasts, focused on entrepreneurship, business, and leadership. The material is based on hundreds of in-depth interviews as well as business presentations. eClips makes it possible for business people (including small business owners and entrepreneurs), educators, and students to find targeted and focused information, because it is organized by entrepreneur, company, demographics, topics, and keywords.
Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is a mitochondrially encoded trait that prevents plants from producing viable pollen. Natural suppressors of CMS, nuclear-encoded restorers of fertility (Rf), are able to restore the production of pollen to plants carrying deleterious mitochondrial CMS-associated genes. Breeders use CMS/restorer systems for hybrid seed production in important crop plants. While CMS-encoding mitochondrial genes have been identified in many species, only four restorer genes have been cloned.
