Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans infects both tomato and potato crops worldwide, and is responsible for major losses in both crops. Never before has late blight been introduced into such a wide area of the Northeast because of massive distribution from big box sale of infected tomato transplants. The public needed to be informed on this event because it affected every individual growing these crops, either commercially or for home garden enjoyment.
The Cornell Small Grains Breeding and Genetics Project has released a new soft white winter wheat variety called Hopkins with exceptionally high grain yield, grain quality and disease resistance. This variety is moderately resistant to fusarium head blight and is more sprout resistant than older varieties, thus increasing the efficiency of production for the farmer, and thereby resulting in higher profits.

I am part of a four-member regional agricultural extension team called the Lake Ontario Fruit Program. We work with commercial tree fruit and berry growers and other industry personnel principally in Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, and Wayne counties. My area of programming is fruit quality management. I deal mainly with post-harvest and storage issues and have projects to extend shelf life, fruit quality, profitability, and sustainability.
The Rust to Green NY Action Research Project is motivated by the desire to champion a shift, from rust to green, in New York’s at-risk older industrial cities. R2G NY’s home base is in Cornell University's Department of Landscape Architecture under the leadership of Director Professor Paula Horrigan and is the direct result of a USDA Hatch Project titled From Rust to Green Places and Networks: Mapping a Sustainable Future for Upstate NY (NYC-146455).

Plant pathologists from all over the Northeast collaborated in monitoring the outbreak of potato and tomato late blight that was initiated in June 2009 and continued into the fall. The reports of late blight occurrence warned commercial growers, home owners, and organic growers that the disease was prevalent and that mitigation procedures should be initiated.
A conceptual framework was developed to describe how capacity supply is influenced by programs that allow customers to express their demand for reliability. The framework demonstrated that if the demand for reliability is not inelastic, at least some consumers would elect a level that is lower or higher than the universally imposed standard at prevailing supply costs. The efficiency of electricity markets can then be improved by implementing measures that reveal those preferences.
